Ingenious Media has launched a fund targeting £50m for investment in video games companies.

Ingenious Games LLP will become one of the largest single sources of finance for the industry and will partner developers, publishers and merchandisers to bring new games to the international market.

The video games industry is now the largest grossing entertainment medium and it is predicted that the sector will grow at twice the rate of the film and music industries over the next five years.

The imminent launch of a number of consoles, increasing software sales, as well as broadband and mobile expansion and a convergence with film, television and music, are among key drivers of growth.

Historically, there have been limited options for individuals looking to invest in the video games industry beyond purchasing shares in publicly listed games publishers, the valuations of which have already been priced in expectation of growth in the market.

The Ingenious Games fund gives individuals the opportunity to invest alongside Ingenious in a wide range of areas including development, marketing, prototyping and licensing.

Global consumer spending on interactive software is expected to grow from $25.4bn in 2004 to $54.6bn in 2009, a compound annual growth rate of 16.5 per cent, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.

It is believed that consumer spending on games software will match combined spending on recorded music and home video by the end of the decade.
